The book and James’ life could be subtitled ,”Where there is a will, there is a way” (James’ line as Agent 0065 in his high school play). The book describes James’ life up to age 25 and vividly resurrects the now-extinct Negro community of Coeymans, NY. I can picture the brickyards and mushroom factories. Former residents of the community and their descendants would be particularly enchanted by his detailed personal narrative. I hope that copies of the book are made available to libraries, historical societies and museums in that area. However, the work is far from limited in its appeal; the appeal is universal!
James was a most industrious youth, earning money in a variety of ways as a janitor, gardener, worm-seller, upholstery- and drapery-maker, etc. He even learned carpentry and television repair. I am impressed that at the end of the book James credits his faith with helping him overcome life’s obstacles and expresses gratitude for God’s grace. His co-founding of an orphanage and school in Haiti is evidence of his generous spirit and concern for the less fortunate.
